The letter C: that’s what we’re ready for today in our A to Z Bible Study. What are some things beginning with C that we can praise God for? Well, I’ve got several including God our Creator and our Comforter.
Compassion
Psalm 78:38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
This verse refers to the children of Israel, who often wandered away from God. But He was compassionate and forgave them time and time again, when they repented and turned back to Him.
Psalm 86:15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
In the Gospels, a phrase that frequently precedes one of Jesus’ miracles is that He had compassion on someone or that He was moved with compassion.
Luke 7:13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
In this verse Jesus is speaking to the widow of Nain, just before He raised her son from the dead. Jesus is compassionate, not only to forgive our sins, but also to help us through difficult circumstances.
Comfort
By comfort, I don’t mean a comfortable and easy life with everything you want. I mean the comfort that God gives us, His presence and His grace for whatever comes our way.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
God’s Holy Spirit that He gives to His children is called the Comforter. Praise the Lord that He has not left us on our own, but has given us the Holy Spirit Who is always with us, no matter where we are or in whatever difficulty we might be facing.
John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Creator
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
God is the Creator of all things, both small and great. Both big and powerful and tiny and delicate. I was reflecting on this a while back when I was on the beach in Florida. The waves were unusually high, crashing on the beach, sending up showers of spray. In those waves, I saw God’s powerful creation.
But in the teeny tiny little shells I found, I saw the incredible detail of His creation. Those tiny shells were just as carefully made as all the rest of God’s amazing creation. Just because something is small, doesn’t make it any less important in God’s eyes.
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Along with creating the universe and our world, God created you and me. But He did not create us and then go away and leave us to fend for ourselves. In addition to being our Creator, He is also our Sustainer and Keeper, giving us strength, His help, when we ask for it.
Cross
Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Without Jesus’ death on the cross, we would have no hope. There would be no way for us to be reconciled to God. But Jesus humbled himself and took our punishment on Himself, going to the cross for us, so we could be forgiven. What an amazing thought that is!
Conclusion
